Please write an essay delineating the reasons why you believe you qualify for a Service Above Self scholarship. | While I have several athletic extracurricular activities that I love, the one that brings me the most meaning and satisfaction is volunteering. It is my way of serving others in my community. I help provide access to meals for people in need by volunteering at Oregon Food Bank. I package food there, and I keep coming back for volunteer sessions because of how visible of an impact it makes on others. After every volunteering session, the organizer writes down on a big whiteboard how many meals were made and how many people would be fed with just the food that we packaged that day. That number is usually in the thousands, meaning that each person makes hundreds of meals in that time span. Helping ensure that everyone has access to food is the most important type of service to me because it is a life necessity and some people's only source of food. Volunteering at Oregon Food Bank has allowed me to participate in the fight to end food insecurity and provide underserved members of my community with access to meals. It is such a simple act of service, but the effects of giving food to those in need are immense.
I also serve the Lakeridge community, helping support not only the high school, but also future Lakeridge students at the middle and elementary schools. At the high school, I often volunteer at the concession stand during sports games. Not only is it a fun activity where I get to see classmates that are attending, but it is also meaningful to me to support various Lakeridge causes that the concession stand’s proceeds go to benefit. It also contributes to enhancing the sense of community when people bond over hot dogs and snacks while watching the game. To serve my local community outside of the high school, I have volunteered at middle and elementary school festivals. Supporting future Pacers by helping run their events builds a more meaningful connection between all of the schools in the community, and I love seeing them come closer together during these events.
I believe I qualify for the Service Above Self scholarship because not only do I have the volunteering experience described above, but I am also constantly looking for various opportunities to serve. I have volunteered at other food pantries, pulled weeds at a spring cleanup event, made hygiene bags, helped clean up at an arboretum, and participated in many more events that serve my community. I believe that my willingness and enthusiasm to serve is what qualifies me for this scholarship.
