Please write an essay delineating the reasons why you believe you qualify for a Service Above Self scholarship. | I believe that I qualify for the Service Above Self scholarship because of my dedication to uplifting STEM education and opportunity in Oregon. As current Captain of the FIRST Robotics team Lake Monsters #2635, I lead the development of outreach and technology. I co-founded Student Technology Against Trafficking, where I am designing technology to capture images and locations to send to the Port of Portland in order to prevent potential victims of human trafficking. I am also partnering with Clackamas Women’s Center, Adventist Group, and J Bar J Youth to help reintegrate victims back into working society through coding lessons and additional resources. I co-founded and actively mentor four robotics teams at Lakeridge and Lake Oswego Middle School. I have also been leading instruction at Doernbechers Childrens hospital; I bring my team's robot as well as mini engineering kits for the kids to play with. Furthermore, I was the lead instructor for Code Can Dance. I taught the children of migrant workers in Woodburn the fundamentals of engineering through STEM exercises. I also led advocacy for STEM and Robotics during the Long Range Facility Planning board meetings. I had my team send letters of support to administration, gathered three FTC teams to meet with both our school Principal and district Superintendent, and testified to the importance of robotics at school district board meetings. In the end, we received a commitment from the board that robotics will have dedicated spaces valued at $37 million. I have also founded “The Portland Alliance” of FRC teams and we are now ten teams strong. We collaborate to provide help to other struggling teams across Oregon with administrative aid, mentorship, and visibility in order to ensure stability and equitable opportunities for generations of teams to come. We are currently working together to raise money for victims of Hurricane Helene. I have even expanded into Washington, working with FRC team Iron Patriots to raise money for LA fire victims through sustainability classes. As a management intern at the Portland State Aerospace Society, I organized and hosted the Pacific Northwest Aerospace Expo in 2024, inviting aerospace teams and speakers from across the PNW to PSU to show off their rocketry and research. I want people to have the opportunity to build, so I will continue to create programs that support people with technology that promotes sustainability and safety. |
